The Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Kandeh K. Yumkella, will be honored with one of the 2013 Energy Efficiency Visionary Awards for his exceptional contribution to the advancement of energy efficiency through his work with the Sustainable Energy for All initiative.

The award, selected by the prestigious EE Global International Steering Committee, is bestowed on recipients from various regions of the world and honors leaders who are advancing the next generation of energy efficiency through the support of investment, education, and modernization.  This reflects the Alliance’s latest unveiling, “Energy 2030,” the clarion call for doubling energy productivity by the year 2030 through action in these three key areas.

In 2012, Yumkella was appointed UN Special Representative for Sustainable Energy for All, an initiative which seeks to accomplish three inter-linked global targets by 2030: 1. universal access to modern energy services; 2. doubling energy efficiency; and 3. doubling the share of renewable energy in the world’s energy mix.  Yumkella traveled to Orlando to speak at EE Global 2012 about the energy efficiency pillar and how to turn this critical designation into action.  He noted that energy efficiency is a source of “prosperity” and must be increased through encouraging behavior changes and partnering with the private sector to take advantage of new business opportunities – two calls to action that are repeatedly echoed at EE Global.

Yumkella will receive the award during the Global EE Visionary Awards and Plenary Luncheon held on Tuesday, May 21st from 12:15 pm to 1:45 pm.
