|Senator Chris Coons |
(D-DE), U.S. Senate
In his first year as a United States Senator, Chris Coons worked hard and has earned a reputation as a principled, pragmatic legislator eager to find bipartisan solutions to the issues confronting Delaware and the nation. He has emerged as a strong voice for job creation and the innovation economy, responsible deficit reduction, progressive social justice, and forward-looking foreign policy.
Unwilling to be sidelined by partisan gridlock, Senator Coons has worked creatively to make a difference. Though legislation to support job creation continues to be obstructed in Congress, Senator Coons organized job fairs around the state to help Delawareans find work. Though funding for new police officers has been stalled by the economic downturn, Senator Coons founded the first-ever Senate Law Enforcement Caucus to help strengthen local, state, and federal public safety efforts. Though legislation in support of equality indifferent to sexual orientation or gender identity is moving slowly, Senator Coons recruited 12 of his colleagues for a stirring video that urged LGBT youth to remember ‘it gets better.’
Serving on the Foreign Relations, Judiciary, Energy & Natural Resources, and Budget committees, Senator Coons is uniquely positioned to nurture American innovation and make the United States more competitive in the global market. He is the only freshman to serve as a subcommittee chair, leading the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs and emerging as an important voice on the security challenges and economic opportunities offered by the continent.
Committed to fulfilling the economic potential of American innovation, Senator Coons has introduced legislation and worked aggressively for a series of measures designed to help create jobs and grow our economy, including a comprehensive overhaul of the nation’s patent system, new protections for American intellectual property, and critical investments in research and development. His first bill in the Senate, the Job Creation Through Innovation Act, would help revitalize domestic manufacturing and create conditions to help businesses grow and create middle-class jobs. Chris later teamed up with Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida to introduce the American Growth, Recovery, Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Act, a bill containing an array of job-creating measures supported by both parties.
Chris’ election to the Senate in 2010 capped a decade of successful service in New Castle County government. In four years as New Castle County Council President and six years as New Castle County Executive, Chris earned a reputation for delivering real results on behalf of Delawareans and protecting the county during the least stable national economic climate in decades. Chris balanced six budgets by eliminating wasteful spending and created jobs through innovative public/private partnerships. His Safe Streets partnership removed dangerous parole violators from our neighborhoods and cleaned up dozens of the worst county properties. He also preserved hundreds of acres of open space and fought for an independent ethics commission to make county government more transparent in its business dealings.
Chris has devoted much of his free time to organizations such as the National Coalition for the Homeless and the education-oriented “I Have a Dream” Foundation.
Prior to serving as County Executive, Chris worked as an attorney for Delaware-based W.L. Gore & Associates, one of the 200 largest privately held companies in the United States, where he helped the company expand and create hundreds of jobs. Chris is a graduate of Amherst College with a B.A. in Chemistry and Political Science, and earned his law degree from Yale Law School and a Master's in Ethics from Yale Divinity School. Chris also studied at the University of Nairobi in Kenya.
A longtime New Castle County resident, Chris grew up in the Pike Creek and Hockessin areas and lives in Wilmington with his wife, Annie, and their three children, Michael, Jack, and Maggie.
Managing Director, Lockheed Martin Energy
Dr. Roger Flanagan serves as Director, Lockheed Martin (LM) Energy. He is responsible for business and operations of LM Energy Utility Solutions worldwide. LM Energy provides utilities with distributed energy resources including energy efficiency, load control, storage, renewables, and microgrids. LM Energy also provides utilities with operations technology including distribution automation, grid & customer analytics, engineering, information management, physical and cyber security.
Dr. Flanagan has 30 years of professional experience in energy and national security with Lockheed Martin and the Tennessee Valley Authority. He has worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and is formerly the Director of the Remote Sensing Laboratory at Nellis and Andrews Air Force Bases. He has held senior technical and management positions in electric power generation and transmission and has managed technical operations support groups at Livermore, Los Alamos, and Sandia National Laboratories.
Dr. Flanagan is a graduate of the University of Tennessee where he earned a Ph.D. in Engineering following earning a master’s and bachelor’s degree in Engineering from West Virginia University. He is the author of numerous publications on energy, materials and engineering science.
Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer, PG&E Company
Laurie M. Giammona is Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer for Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E).
Giammona is responsible for leading contact centers, product development, sales and services, and meter-to-cash operations at PG&E. She focuses on developing and implementing customer-centric, enterprise-wide business strategies to create customer experiences that help define PG&E as a leading utility. She also leads extensive energy efficiency, solar and demand response portfolios.
A native of the Bay Area, Giammona joined PG&E in 2012 as Vice President of Customer Service, where she implemented an extensive upgrade of the Contact Centers and led initiatives to improve customer satisfaction scores and enhance customer experience. She drove PG&E's local presence initiative, forming Division Leadership Teams throughout the service territory to better understand and address the local needs of customers. Under her leadership, the company's online and mobile platforms were enhanced to create greater options for customers to self-serve and select preferences for transactions with the company.
Giammona previously served in the role of Regional Vice President of Customer Care at Comcast, where she led sales, service and customer experience serving 5 million households in California. Giammona also served as Area Vice President for Comcast where she was responsible for field services, engineering and construction, government relations and direct sales. Prior to the merger of Comcast and AT&T Broadband she served as Vice President of Customer Care, where she led Management Information Systems and Credit and Collections and led call center organizational design, development and effectiveness programs from the ground up after the company acquired TCI Cable.
Giammona also held executive positions at United Airlines, leading teams in Customer Service, Business Operations, Airport Operations, Sales, and Training and Development.
She currently serves as the vice-chair of the executive board for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Greater Bay Area.
|Thomas R. Kuhn|
President, Edison Electric Institute (EEI)
Tom Kuhn is President of the Edison Electric Institute, the association that represents all U.S. investor-owned electric companies. EEI’s members provide electricity for 220 million Americans, operate in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and directly employ more than 500,000 workers. In addition, EEI has 70 international electric companies as International Members, and 270 industry suppliers and related organizations as Associate Members. Mr. Kuhn joined the Institute in 1985 as executive vice president, was named chief operating officer in 1988, and elected president in 1990.
Prior to joining EEI, Mr. Kuhn was president of the American Nuclear Energy Council, which subsequently merged with the Nuclear Energy Institute. The Council represented virtually all of the companies in the commercial nuclear power industry. He joined the Council in 1975 as vice president, government affairs, and became president in 1983.
From 1972 to 1975, Mr. Kuhn headed the energy section of the investment banking firm, Alex Brown and Sons. Prior to that, from 1970 to 1972, he was White House Liaison Officer to the Secretary of the Navy.
Mr. Kuhn received a BA in Economics in 1968 from Yale University, served as a Naval Officer following his graduation, and received an MBA in 1972 from George Washington University. He completed the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Senior Executive Program in 1989.
Mr. Kuhn served on the Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board and the Board of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves on the Boards of the Alliance to Save Energy, the United States Energy Association, the Electric Drive Transportation Association, and the American Council for Capital Formation. He is Chairman-Emeritus of the Committee of 100 of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Chairman-Emeritus of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), and past-chairman of the Alliance to Save Energy, the ASAE/Key Industry Association Committee, and the Trade Association Liaison Council.
Mr. Kuhn is Chairman-Emeritus of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as well as the National Capital Chapter. He currently serves on the Board of the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation. From 2006 to 2008, Mr. Kuhn served on the Board of the National Park Foundation. Mr. Kuhn was awarded the Bess Goodman Humanitarian Award in 2000. He served as 1992 and 1997 chairman of the Associations Division, United Way Campaign, and chairman of the 1996 through 1998 National Alliance to End Homelessness Awards dinners.
Mr. Kuhn was chosen as Association Executive of the Year 2000 by Association TRENDS magazine. He was the recipient of The Energy Daily’s 2000 Public Policy Leadership Award. He received the Alliance to Save Energy’s 2004 Chairman’s Award. Mr. Kuhn also received the 2009 ASAE/Center for Association Leadership’s Key Award. He is the recipient of the Fund for American Studies (TFAS) 2014 Congressional Scholarship Award. In September 2015, Mr. Kuhn was honored as the 2015 Trade Association CEO of the Year. Presented by CEO Update, the award recognizes excellence in trade associations and professional societies.
|Senator Rob Portman |
(R-OH), U.S. Senate
Rob Portman is a United States Senator from the state of Ohio. He was elected in 2010, running a campaign that focused on common-sense conservative ideas to help create jobs and get the deficit under control. Rob won with a margin of 57 to 39 percent, winning 82 of Ohio's 88 counties.
Rob was born and raised in Cincinnati, where he lives today with his wife Jane, and their three children, Jed, Will and Sally. He grew up in a small business family, where he learned early on the value of hard work, leadership, and fiscal responsibility. When Rob was young, his dad, Bill Portman, borrowed money to start Portman Equipment Company, where Rob and his brother and sister all worked while growing up. His father, and then his brother, built the family business from a small forklift truck dealership with five employees, with Rob's mom as the bookkeeper, to one that employed more than 300 people. Rob became a lawyer and developed his own private practice, representing Portman Equipment Company and other small businesses. In 1993, Rob was a partner in the Cincinnati law firm of Graydon, Head and Ritchey when he was elected to Congress, where he represented the diverse, seven county Second District in southern Ohio. He was proud to serve the Second District for twelve years, and in seven elections, he never received less than seventy percent of the vote.
During his time representing the Second District, Rob earned a reputation as a serious leader who focused on results. Rob was actively involved in crafting and promoting the historic welfare reform efforts as a member of the committee that wrote the legislation, and he was a forceful advocate of the balanced budget that passed in 1997. Rob gained the respect of both Republican and Democratic colleagues through his successful, bipartisan legislative initiatives, including several measures he authored to increase retirement savings, reform the IRS and add over fifty new taxpayer rights, curb unfunded mandates, reduce taxes, and expand drug prevention and land conservation efforts.
In 2005, Rob left Congress when he was asked to serve as the United States Trade Representative, the Cabinet-level official responsible for implementing and enforcing U.S. trade policy. In his one year in the job, Rob was successful in reducing barriers to U.S. exports and increasing enforcement of trade laws to help level the playing field for American farmers, workers and service providers. Under his leadership, American exports increased and the U.S. brought successful legal challenges against international trade law violations.
Following his accomplishments as Trade Representative, Rob was asked to serve in another Cabinet post, this time as Director of the Office of Management and Budget. A deficit hawk, Rob made his mark by proposing a balanced budget, fighting irresponsible earmarks, and putting in place new transparency measures for all federal spending.
Rob succeeded George Voinovich as Ohio's U.S. Senator on January 5, 2011 and immediately began fighting for pro-growth, pro-jobs policies to help get Ohio and our nation back on track.
Senior Vice President of Policy & Research, Alliance to Save Energy
Kelly Speakes-Backman is Senior Vice President of Policy and Research at the Alliance to Save Energy. Previous to this position, she was an appointed Commissioner with the Maryland Public Service Commission, from 2011 to 2015. As an adjunct to the Commission, she also served as chair of the Board of Directors of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, as a co-vice chair of the NARUC Committee on Energy Resources and the Environment, as a co-chair to the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnership’s EM&V Forum, and as a member of the EPRI Energy Efficiency & Grid Modernization Public Advisory Group.
Kelly has spent more than 20 years working in energy and energy efficiency, sustainability, renewables, and environmental business strategies. Her direct technology experience includes power generation from solar, wind, biogas and biomass, distributed generation, natural gas, smart grid and fuel cells. She joined the public service sector in 2010 as the Clean Energy Director at the Maryland Energy Administration, where she led a team of policy experts and grant administrators to implement programs to meet the Administration’s goal of increasing Maryland’s renewable energy portfolio to 20 percent by 2022. Kelly has testified in Congressional Committees on energy issues, presented regularly at energy industry events and has authored several articles published in energy trade magazines. She also has served on several energy-related steering committees, including the GridWise Alliance (GWA) Grid Modernization Index (GMI) Steering Committee. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Boston University.
Vice President, Communications, Consumer Technology Association
Tyler Suiters oversees the Consumer Technology Association’s (CTA) strategic communications efforts – including support for energy and environmental policy advocacy – and has a deep background in the sustainability sector. His team has supported CTA research on the increasing efficiency of in-home technologies, the energy and emissions savings under the Set-Top Box Voluntary Agreement, and the sustainability efforts of CES® – the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies – which is owned and produced by CTA.
Tyler’s previous work as Vice President, International Affairs at Edelman Worldwide included providing sustainability program counsel to energy companies in the fossil fuels and renewables sectors – both exploration/production and generation – and environmental sector stakeholders including WWF. He also spent time living in the Persian Gulf, while implementing strategies for the United Arab Emirates’ Directorate of Energy and Climate Change.
Prior to joining the Edelman team, Tyler covered international environmental and energy policy as Chief Correspondent for the national TV program energyNOW! on Bloomberg. In additional to extensive coverage on and around Capitol Hill, his assignments took him to such locales as China, Israel and Iceland, and included covering UN climate negotiations in Copenhagen, Denmark. Cancun, Mexico. and Durban, South Africa.
EVP, Global Product Organization, Whirlpool Corporation
David (Dave) T. Szczupak joined Whirlpool Corporation as executive vice president, Global Product Organization, in July 2008. He provides overall leadership for the company's product businesses and strategic sourcing. Prior to joining the company, Szczupak served as chief operating officer of Dura Automotive Systems in Rochester Hills, Michigan, a $2-billion international automotive supplier. While at Dura, he provided strategic direction for product development, purchasing, manufacturing and product quality. Before joining Dura in 2006, Dave worked for Jaguar and Ford Motor Company for over 25 years, where he held a variety of leadership roles. While at Ford, Szczupak led a series of organization and process transformation efforts to achieve exceptional levels of efficiency, quality and lean world-class competitiveness. Dave has maintained a focus on Energy and Sustainability throughout his career in both the Automotive and Consumer Products organizatoins. His passion for efficiency is visible throughout the Whirlpool global product portfolio, which continues to drive positive change within the global home appliance industry. Szczupak has a master's degree in automotive engineering from Cranfield University in the United Kingdom.
