DESCRIPTION: In a recent survey of 150 smart city leaders in twelve countries, half of all smart city applications targeted improvements in urban energy, resource or operational efficiency. The most implemented applications included smart LED lighting, distributed energy systems, intelligent traffic systems, smart metering infrastructure and centralized operations centers. Despite significant interest, twice as many organizations are piloting smart city applications versus implementing them due primarily to financial barriers. How can energy efficiency, with its proven business case and performance-based financing models, provide a platform for greater urban efficiency investment and outcomes?
